The Balleny Islands are a heavily iced group of volcanic origin with glaciers projecting from the slopes and reaching into the sea. The three main islands are Young, Buck, and Sturge with several smaller islets are rocks surrounding them. Humpback whales are known to spend time in the area that surrounds the Balleny Islands as they migrate in and out based on the season.
