Located on along the Icy Strait in the Inside Passage, Hoonah is the largest Tlingit village in Alaska. In the early 1900s, the Hoonah Packing Co. built a large salmon cannery just north of town. After years of on and off operation, the building closed and sat empty until Huna Totem Corp. purchased the facility and turned it into the cruise port called Icy Strait Point. The cannery is now the main attraction as it houses a museum, a 1930's cannery line display, restaurants, and local arts and crafts shops. Visitors will find plenty of outdoor activity as well, including things like hiking excursions, Native dance performances, bear viewing, and whale watching. Humpback and killer whales are often spotted off the shore just outside the town. Other notable attractions include sea kayaking, sport fishing, and natural hot springs.
