New Island is a wildlife haven for bird colonies like the rockhopper penguin, black-browed albatross, and king cormorant. While these birds rest in the cliffs, it is just a short, easy walk down the sloping eastern side to see various other bird species like the gentoo penguins and oystercatchers. Other sightings might include Peale's Porpoises, Falkland fur seals, and the occasional group of whales during their migration in the summer. As the wildlife on the island is relatively tame, photographers will find many opportunities for beautiful shots both of the animals and the scenery around them. For the astronomer, New Island is also one of the best spots in the world to view the stars and planets as there is no light pollution around to disturb the view.
