Ornes, Norway

Just north of the Arctic Circle, Ornes is located in Norway's Meloy municipality and stands as the region's administrative center. The village is small, with a population of around 1,600, but it boasts a breathtaking backdrop of more than 30 mountain peaks. Ornes is home to Urnes Stave Church, considered the oldest of its kind. Dating to A.D. 1130, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is noted for its combination of Celtic art, Viking traditions and Romanesque structures. Fishing and hiking are popular area pastimes, and Svartisen, Norway's second-largest glacier, is a short distance away.
