The land of Pumalin National Park was originally purchased by Douglas Tompkins in 1991 as a way to protect the temperate rainforest of Chile from future exploitation. Over the years, more land has been bought and dedicated to the park so that today it spreads to more than 300,000 acres. Under strict conservation guidelines, the park is slowly developing a tourist infrastructure in some areas with information centers, camping areas, excursion trails, cafes, and land and water excursions.
