A Food Lover’s Guide To What to Eat On Their Varanasi Trip-October 2024
Oct 29, 2024 10:26 PM

Varanasi is primarily known as a pilgrimage hub, drawing people who come to pay their respects to the holy waters of the Ganga to wash away their sins and seek "moksha" (salvation). However, this ancient town is also a paradise for food lovers, with traditional delicacies that attract visitors from around the world. From the delectable kachori sabzi to the indulgent malaiyyo, the tantalising tamatar chaat, and refreshing, flavoured lassis — Varanasi offers a treasure trove of treats for a food experience like no other.

My trip to Varanasi was all about capturing the true essence of this ancient city, often said to be older than tradition and history itself. Varanasi stands out as both unique and magical, thanks to its rich culture and diverse attractions. After days of exploring the city and immersing myself in everything it had to offer, I decided to set aside a full day just to savour the delicious street food tucked away in the labyrinthine narrow streets. It was an experience that promised to reveal yet another layer of Varanasi's charm.

Delectable Kachori Sabzi and Jalebi at Ram Bhandar, Thatheri Bazaar

I decided to begin my day with the irresistible Kachori Sabzi, the most popular breakfast in all of Varanasi. This dish features piping hot sabzi made with potatoes and chickpeas, flavored with unique spices, and served with freshly fried poori or kachoris. Though it’s available all over the city, Ram Bhandar is the most popular spot for this spicy and tangy treat.

Sinful Malaiyyo at Shreeji Sweets & Milk, Dashashwamedh Road

Meandering through the narrow lanes of Kashi and admiring the beautiful graffiti adorning the walls, I arrived at Shreeji Sweets & Milk, renowned for its famous milk delicacy, Malaiyyo. This saffron-infused, frothy milk is topped with dollops of fresh cream, served in a traditional earthen pot or kulhad, and garnished with almonds, saffron, and pistachios. As a winter-special dessert, Malaiyyo is both visually appealing and sinfully delicious. While many small stalls in the area offer this delightful treat, Shreeji Sweets & Milk is simply the best place to experience its authentic taste.

Lassies Galore at Blue Lassi, Kachori Gali

After indulging in the delicious treats, I set out in search of the world-famous Blue Lassi. I had yet to come across a lassi shop like this—its quaint, blue-painted walls were covered in passport-size photos and handwritten notes from visitors worldwide. This 92-year-old establishment enjoys a stellar reputation and offers an extensive menu with over 75 varieties of lassi. Popular favorites include saffron, blueberry, banana, and pomegranate lassis. And for the chocolate lovers, the Oreo Lassi is an absolute must-try.

Temping Tamatar Chaat at Kashi Chat Bhandar, Godowlia Road

Treat your taste buds to a unique snack—Tamatar Chaat. This delightful mix of mashed boiled tomatoes and potatoes, topped with onions, green chilies, and coriander, is truly one-of-a-kind. As a spicy food enthusiast, I couldn’t resist this tempting delicacy. The place is a veritable treasure trove of innovative, mouth-watering treats, including the Palak Papdi Chaat, Chena Dahi Vada, and Dahi Chutney Golgappe. Each dish offers a burst of flavors, perfect for anyone eager to dive into Varanasi’s vibrant street food scene.

Chooda Matar at Deena Chaat Bhandar near Dashashwamedh Ghat

For those seeking a healthier snack option, Chooda Matar is an excellent choice. This Banarasi take on the classic poha features flattened rice soaked in ghee and stir-fried with fresh green peas and aromatic spices. What makes it truly special are the unique additions of milk or cream, along with raisins and saffron, creating a flavorful and slightly indulgent twist on a familiar favorite. It’s a perfect treat to experience the wholesome flavors of Varanasi with a hint of richness.
