Nov 8, 2024 3:32 AM

Delta Air Lines has a global network that can get you around the U.S. and beyond. If your travel plans are taking you to Mexico, Delta and its SkyTeam partner Aeromexico have you covered. SkyMiles elite members are even eligible to request complimentary upgrades on Aeromexico.

While Aeromexico has its own network of flights that will get you where you need to go south of the border, this guide is for Delta fans specifically. So, let’s help you find out all you need to know about booking Delta flights to Mexico.

Where Delta flies in Mexico

Delta flights to Mexico include such destinations as:

Cancun.

Cozumel.

Guadalajara.

Mexico City.

Monterrey.

Puerto Vallarta.

San Jose del Cabo.

Fly nonstop to Mexico

Delta flights to Mexico are available from numerous hub cities around the country. But if you want to fly nonstop to Mexico, you'll need to depart from one of these airports:

Atlanta.

Boston.

Detroit.

Los Angeles.

Minneapolis/St. Paul.

New York - JFK.

Salt Lake City.

Seattle/Tacoma.

If you want to get to Mexico but don’t live near one of these hubs, don’t worry. For example, say you want to fly to Cancun, but you live in Portland, Oregon. You can still get there but will need to make a connection along the way at one of those Delta hubs.

Flight availability

When booking Delta flights to Mexico, you'll want to check several things first, including the schedule and potential for redeeming miles. The locations you want to travel to and from, as well as the day of the week and time of the year you want to travel can all have a dramatic effect on the price of your ticket.

By dates

For starters, see if the flight you want is daily. You will also want to see how often flights are available between your two cities. For example, Delta routinely operates two nonstop flights to Cancun per day, but there are currently dates in late April where only one nonstop flight is offered per day. This might mean you have to stop for a quick layover to reach your desired destination.

By destination

Where you start and end your trip may also influence flight availability. If you’re flying from a mega-hub like Atlanta or New York-JFK, you may have more nonstop options than flying from another city like Huntsville, Alabama, or Syracuse, New York. Your destination can also make a major difference. For example, you can fly nonstop to Cancun from Seattle, but getting from Seattle to Mexico City will require a layover.

Booking Delta flights to Mexico

Delta fares to Mexico, like any other destination, can vary based on where you're departing from, where you're traveling to and your travel dates. If you are hoping to use SkyMiles for your trip, you’ll want to be especially flexible with your dates and flight options.

Expect dynamic pricing

The Delta SkyMiles program does not have an award chart, which means the number of miles you need varies by city pair and dates of travel. If you’re flexible, you might be able to find a lower redemption. Delta’s website has a “my dates are flexible” button, which allows you to search multiple dates at one time.

The same flexible search option is available when paying in cash, too. This is a great way to determine which dates can save you more money.

Expect to pay taxes and fees for both cash and award fares

Even when you book with miles, there are international taxes and fees. You can review the breakdown of what you’re being charged during the booking process.

Checking in for your Delta flight to Mexico

The check-in process when you are heading to Mexico may be a little different than you are used to for domestic flights. Flying international requires being at the airport a bit earlier than normal since you will have to show your passport before boarding. Delta recommends arriving at the ticket counter three hours prior to departure at international airports. You must also be checked in at least an hour prior to departure.

All passengers, including U.S. citizens and children, regardless of age, must have a valid passport book for all air travel to and from the U.S.

Earn points faster with a credit card

Delta has numerous co-branded credit cards, which can help you save money since many come with perks like free checked bags and priority boarding.

Card options include:

Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card ($0): Earn 10,000 bonus miles after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months. Terms Apply.
