A New Budget Airline Is Offering $69 Flights to the Moon — Here’s What You Need to Know-October 2024

This is not a drill. We repeat this is not a drill. Hopping on the bandwagon of other budget airlines like Norwegian and WOW, Far-Out Air is also offering $69 flights -- only this voyage takes you a little farther than Europe. For the price of dinner and a movie in New York City, intrepid travelers may be able to fly to the moon as soon as next month. The airport from which this flight will launch is still to be determined. But before you start having visions of living out your “2001: A Space Odyssey” fantasies, snap back to reality for just a moment. Much like the other airlines offering similar deals, this out-of-this-world journey comes with its fair share of caveats. Luckily, we’ve looked into the fine print and laid out everything you need to know about the lunar excursion below.

The tickets are one-way.

If you think this deal is too good to be true, you might be right. While the outbound fare off the planet is a steal, you may have to find your own way back. And the return leg might not be so cheap either. The last we checked, folks were shelling out tens of millions of dollars per seat. Word on the street is there’s also a brand-new hotel opening in the area, just in time for this flight.

Brace yourself for some seriously uncomfortable turbulence.

With the rocket propelling at 24,000 miles per hour, travelers can expect the ride to be an extremely bumpy one. The upside? The long-haul, three-day flight features no layovers, so you can get there in one direct trip.

If the cabin depressurizes, oxygen masks won’t help.

The Far-Out vessel won’t come equipped with oxygen masks, but it’s not as morbid as it sounds. In case of an emergency, travelers will have access to helmets attached to oxygen tanks. Similar to other flights, there’ll be a pre-flight demonstration on how to lock yours in place. And as per usual, it’s recommended you hook on your own helmet before helping others.

There are no flight attendants.

If you live for your mid-flight peanuts and cocktail served by a friendly flight attendant, then this orbit might not be ideal for you. While there will be a crew on board, you’ll have to fend for yourself when it comes to snacks and getting that extra blanket.

There are 7983475984 hidden fees.

Following suit of the other low-cost airlines, Far-Out Air will have you coughing up a pretty penny for food, window seats (worth the splurge), and luggage. There are no overhead compartments, so travelers must check their baggage. There’s a fee for that, too. And if you think airline food tastes bland now, just wait until you try the freeze-dried fruit, meat, and veggies. One upside: The flight will come with free Wi-Fi, so your Instagram story will not suffer. #Phew.

In addition, the discounted rates mean that fliers don’t get to choose their seats. In fact, the vessel is made up entirely of economy seats, with no first or business class options. That being said, the in-flight entertainment, which includes screenings of the 1902 film “A Trip to the Moon” and of course, a stellar view out the window, does make up for the lack of perks. After all, deals like this only come around once in a blue moon.

April Fools!
