A new fee for travel to Europe is on its way
A new fee for travel to Europe is on its way-December 2024
Dec 30, 2024 12:20 PM

Starting in 2025, you'll have to add a little extra to your European travel budget, because a new feepart of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)is on the way.

Barring further delays, Americans and other non-EU travelers who don't need a visa will have to pay up 7 (about $7.60) and fill out a quick online form before jetting off to Europe. This new fee was originally slated for 2021, bumped to November 2023 and then pushed to 2025. The fee could be delayed once again, but take this as a heads up so you're prepared when the time comes.

Applying for ETIAS is actually a breeze. Youll need to provide your passport details, your first European destination and answer a few background questions. Most applications should be approved in about 10 minutes, but plan ahead in the event that you're one of the lucky ones to require additional documentation or even an interview.

Once youre greenlit, your ETIAS pass is good for three years or until your passport expires. Be sure to secure this authorization before booking anything else for your trip like flights or accommodations.

While this new step is not quite the red tape of yesteryear, ETIAS is something to keep in mind as you plan your next European escapade. Find all relevant FAQs here.
