　　The Denmark Tavern

　　The Denmark Tavern, a lovingly restored heritage structure, overlooks the Hooghly River in Serampore, about an hour's drive from Kolkata. This tavern is an excellent example of the adaptive reuse of a historic building. While Serampore is primarily known for its role in the history of Bengali printing and publishing, it was under Danish administration from 1755 to 1845. During this time, the Danes eventually sold their Indian interests to the UK. The trade that flourished during this period allowed several local Bengali families, such as the Goswamis, to prosper and build magnificent mansions in the area. In 1786, British innkeeper James Parr opened the Denmark Tavern & Hotel in Serampore, which quickly became popular among Europeans. Now managed by the Park Hotels group, the Tavern has been beautifully restored. The restaurant features a vibrant pastel colour palette and elegant Danish design. It offers a delicious selection of multi-cuisine dishes and opens up to a garden area with casual outdoor seating.
