A land that bears the diverse historical imprint of rulers such as the Rajputs and the Junagadh Nawabs, Sasan Gir is a place that has come to be synonymous with the majestic Asiatic lion overtime. It is the only place in the world where you can spot the majestic Asiatic lions in the wild, turning it into a dream destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Nestled in Gujarat, Sasan Gir is a small village and main entry point to the Gir National Park, home to diverse flora and fauna, including leopards, hyenas, jackals and over 300 species of birds. Nevertheless, Sasan Gir isn’t just about its wildlife as it extends its appeal to its rural charm, cultural experiences and natural beauty making it a well-rounded destination. This three-day itinerary will help you make the most of your visit without rushing, ensuring you experience the park's best safaris, local culture, and nearby attractions in a well-paced manner.

Day 1: Getting Acquainted with Sasan Gir

Morning: Jeep Safari – Your First Encounter with the Wild

Asiatic lions in Gujarat, India

Begin your trip with a morning vehicle safari in Gir National Park. Since the elusive Asiatic lions are most active in the morning, the morning safari which sets off at 6 am is the best bet for a good sighting. You can also keep your eyes peeled for striped hyenas, leopards and crocodiles lounging by the lake as your vehicle wades through the difficult grasslands and dense teak trees. When in the wild, remember to look up through the trees as Gir is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. You stand a good chance to spot crested serpent eagles, Malabar whistling thrushes, and paradise flycatchers.

Afternoon: Devalia Safari Park – A Mini Gir Experience

After a relaxing breakfast, head to the Devalia Safari Park, also known as the Gir Interpretation Zone. This is a fenced area where you can spot a variety of wildlife, including lions, in a more controlled environment. It's a great way to complement your morning safari, especially if you missed spotting certain species. Spend some time at the visitor centre, which provides insights into Gir’s conservation efforts and biodiversity.

Evening: Stroll Through a Maldhari Village

Towards the evening, wander through the widths of the local Maldhari village. Gir's animals and the pastoral Maldharis have cohabited the space for millennia. You can indulge in interactions with the local community that is sure to provide you a distinctive cultural experience. At the village, you can sample fresh dairy products, discover more about the traditional way of life and witness the peaceful coexistence with the big cats unfolding. Later, enjoy a traditional Gujarati thali at your resort to cap off the evening.

Day 2: Deeper into the Wilderness

Morning: Second Safari for a New Perspective

On your second day, set out on another safari to a different zone of the park. Each Gir safari route is uniquely curated offering varying odds of spotting animals. Turn your attention to a different set of animals from the first day, for instance, the sloth bears of the Indian pangolin. If you are fortunate enough, you may sight the two along with the lions in a single day — it's known to have happened. The experience along the safari rides in itself is quite beautiful giving you a respite of fresh air and clear morning with the sun rays glimmering through the trees.

Afternoon: Kamleshwar Dam – A Scenic Break

Naturally formed Kamleshwar Dam

As the day wanes further, take a quick drive to the Kamleshwar Dam, one of the park's most picturesque spots. The dam offers a habitat of marsh crocodiles and is essential to the area's water supply. Take in the tranquil surroundings, stroll along the borders and observe the bird calls as you see the other birds skimming and waddling the water. The spot is great to unwind and contemplate on the wilderness you've absorbed so far.

  Evening: Sunset at Girnar Hills

The 10,000 steps to the Girnar hill top brings you to this stunning view

Later, you can take the 90-minute drive from Sasan Gir to the foothills of Mount Girnar if you are open to quick excursions. The place is a wonderful fusion of nature and spirituality, well known for its Hindu shrines and Jain temples. Over here, you can witness one of the best sunset vistas. Later on, you can have a relaxed, slow evening alongside your meal at the resort accompanied with chats about the safari experiences.

Day 3: Beyond the National Park

Morning: Crocodile Breeding Centre & Birdwatching at Hiran River

Juvenile crocodiles in water

Finally, on your third day, head out to the Crocodile Breeding Centre, located close to Sasan Gir. Making your last morning about marsh crocodile conservation initiatives, you can then set off for the Hiran River, a secret bird watching destination. While migratory birds like flamingos and pelicans arrive in the winter, kingfishers and herons can always be found in the lush riverbanks. Before you end your tour, it's a tranquil approach to be in touch with nature.

Afternoon: Somnath Temple – A Spiritual Detour

After your safari, you can explore Gujarat's spiritual and architectural legacy by visiting Somnath

A visit to this part of Gujarat is left incomplete without a visit to the Somnath Temple, about an hour drive from Sasan Gir. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, this ancient temple is a significant pilgrimage destination and a work of architectural wonder. It is worth visiting regardless of your religious beliefs because of its historical significance and beachfront location. Before you return, grab lunch at one of the eateries along the water.

Evening: Shopping & Local Delicacies in Junagadh

Mahabat Maqbara in Junagadh

On your way back, make sure you stop in Junagadh. The city is full of architecture that stands unparalleled in all of India. You can witness the most bizarre architectural fusions in Junagadh as it houses the Indo-Gothic monuments alongside Islamic, Hindu, and colonial elements in an intriguing way. Later, try some of the local street cuisine, such as undhiyu, dabeli, or fafda-jalebi, before returning to your lodging or catching your ride home.
