CLEAR® Plus bills itself as the ultimate airport security time-saver, but its growing popularity has led to long lines and waits at many airports, big and small. Now, CLEAR Plus is trying out saving travelers time in another line: bag check queues.
CLEAR just launched a pilot program at the Denver (DEN) airport, offering curbside bag drop service to CLEAR Plus members. Enrolled travelers can simply head to CLEAR's dedicated bag drop stand outside Door 600 West and even fill out a pre-registration form to expedite the process to get their bags tagged and taken away, then step inside to clear security.
The best part? It doesn't cost CLEAR Plus members another dime beyond the (admittedly steep) $189-a-year membership fee. Bag drop at Denver is open daily from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Travelers have to get to the airport at least an hour before to use this new bag drop feature.
At launch, it's only available for domestic departures on United and Delta and it's unclear whether that will expand to additional carriers. And CLEAR has no current plans to extend this new bag drop service to the other 50-plus airports with CLEAR Plus lanes.
While extremely limited for now, it's a useful addition that many CLEAR Plus members would surely love to see expanded to other airlines departing from Denver and better yet, to other airports across the country. If security checkpoints are the biggest bottleneck at the airport, baggage drop queues aren't far behind.
CLEAR® Plus is the privately run airport security program that uses biometrics (think fingerprints or iris scans) to allow you to cut to the front of the line.On its own, you can skip to the front of the standard security line by heading through a dedicated CLEAR® Plus lane. In tandem with PreCheck, you can skip to the front of that shorter, faster line, keeping your coat and shoes on and keeping electronics inside your bag, too.
But the service's growing popularity fueled by the increasing number of credit cards that cover its hefty enrollment fee has outpaced some airports' capacity to handle all the travelers signing up. That's led to long lines and negligible time-savings at many busy hubs, including an increasingly common gripe that TSA PreCheck itself is faster. As CLEAR has been forced to double-check more and more travelers' IDs and triple-check members' details as part of a looming upgrade, it's only gotten worse.

Bottom Line CLEAR is getting into the luggage handling business maybe.
The privately run security program is piloting a curbside baggage checkpoint in Denver (DEN), allowing CLEAR® Plus members to skip the baggage drop queues inside the airport but only for those flying United or Delta domestically, at least for now.
Will it work? Will it expand to additional airports over time? Time will tell.
