Endless Summer Series: Palm Springs in September (Get There Quick!)
Endless Summer Series: Palm Springs in September (Get There Quick!)-November 2024
Nov 17, 2024 9:31 PM

Even though we’ve been trying to embrace all things fall, we still can’t help but feel like summer came and went too quickly this year. And while fireplaces and fall reading and apple picking are all nice, we’d still love some time defined by warm weather, sandy shoes, and suntan lotion — especially as the temperatures start to drop, and drop, and drop some more. So we’ve come up with an Endless Summer Series to satisfy our sand-and-sun dreamin’. It’s a simple idea based on the fact that no matter what month it is, it’s summer somewhere. And since it doesn’t get much hotter than the desert, we figured that was a pretty good place to start sizzling. No need to throw in the (beach) towel on your warm weather wanderlust!

Since the perma-tanned in Southern California are still sporting tank tops and sunglasses in triple-digit temperatures, the scorching heat of Palm Springs may not be on their immediate “must visit NOW” list. But for those of us who have just started to don beanies, tights, and scarves once again, Palm Springs sounds kinda perfect. Located within the Coachella Valley — about 100 miles from the Los Angeles smog — the desert city is a reborn retro oasis. A popping party retreat (originally made popular in the mid ’60s and ’70s by the likes of Sinatra, Bogart, and Elvis), Palm Springs was rediscovered in the late ’90s by a younger generation that can’t get enough of its retro-chic vibe. With more to offer than late-night pool parties, Palm Springs is also great for those who want to relax and rejuvenate in natural mineral springs (or on a fancy massage treatment table), or reconnect with nature via hiking trails and star-canopied night skies.

In September, daytime temperatures reach triple digits, while nights stay balmy in the high 70s to 80s. So here are our top Palm Springs picks for every budget.

The upscale Two Bunch Resort and Spa is renowned for its natural mineral springs — such as its relaxing grotto complete with a waterfall. Set on 56 acres, the resort attracts guests who come here to relax and take advantage of the amazing spa, hot springs, many hiking trails, lakes, and free yoga classes. Al Capone supposedly came here when he wanted to unwind. Guests looking for activities like golf, tennis, or shopping should look elsewhere — this place is more about kicking back than getting active (although both can be accomplished). Airy rooms, located either near the spa (the “Grotto” rooms) or past the meditation lakes (the “Fountain” rooms), can have details such as tile floors and wood beam ceilings. But they vary quite a bit — some are understated and luxurious, while others feel a bit bare and outdated.

The 10-room Palm Springs Rendezvous is great for guests looking for character and affordability in their Palm Springs hotel. It’s part bed-and-breakfast, and part 1950s roadside motel — but with up-to-date amenities. The small staff does its best to make guests feel at home, and they really delivers on the details. Those who want to explore the area, or who are just looking for a place with personality away from the resort crowds, will appreciate many of the freebies — like poolside happy hours, Wi-Fi, and bike rentals — here.

Korakia Pensione is a striking hotel. Modeled after a Mediterranean pensione, it looks like something out of Greece or Morocco — and Forbes named it one of the sexiest hotels in America. The two pools and many outdoor spaces — including fire pits, fountains, and stone paths — are all beautiful…and unexpected. The rooms are named, not numbered, and each is slightly different, but all have an old-world feel, and the hotel plays old movies every night outside on the terrace.

Doubling as a time-share property, the Palm Canyon Resort and Spa has more amenities than guests might expect for a hotel in this price range. The big rooms have full kitchens and nice balconies, but furniture is dated and some carpets are stained. The huge swimming pool and sun deck covers an acre and a half of the grounds, and it includes waterfalls and water slides. The hotel is geared towards families with kids and those looking for affordable rates.
