Endless Summer Series: St. Pete Beach in October
Endless Summer Series: St. Pete Beach in October-December 2024
Dec 24, 2024 8:10 AM

Here at zzdtravel, we believe summer should be a year-round celebration, so we’ve come up with an Endless Summer Series to satisfy our sand-and-sun dreamin’. It’s a simple idea based on the fact that no matter what month it is, it’s summer somewhere. And since we started off September on the hot sands of Palm Springs, we figure the next logical step should be on the sunny sands of St. Pete Beach, Florida, where flip flops and tank tops are still given a warm welcome — even in October.

Sure, people are always giving props to California for its year-round perfect weather, but what about Florida? You know, the sunshine state. Florida may not be known for its dry heat like California, but St. Pete Beach, Florida’s humidified residents can often be seen sporting tank tops and tan lines around the Christmas tree — which is a warm weather trend we can really get behind come December! But to avoid the throngs of holiday-time snowbirds covering the beaches (did we mention that St. Pete Beach has previously been voted the #1 U.S. beach and the #5 beach destination in the world?), it’s wise to hit the sand and the Gulf of Mexico’s lusciously warm waters a little early — say, like, now. In October, daytime temperatures are still in the 80s, while nights rarely dip below 70. Gulf waters usually fall somewhere in the 70s. We love it when dipping into the ocean come October doesn’t qualify as a polar bear plunge! So here are our picks of where to stay in St. Pete Beach for every budget.

The 277-room Loews Don CeSar Hotel (nicknamed “The Pink Castle” by locals, for obvious reasons) is a luxury property located directly on the white sands of St. Pete Beach. Its combination of family-friendly amenities (with activity options for kids and teens), opulent Gatsby-era vibe, lushly landscaped grounds, and excellent service sets it apart from the majority of hotels in the area. Rooms are modern and bright, with elegant beach-style decor, and there are various suite options — some with pool and beach views. But sunning in the lap of luxury doesn’t come cheap; prices here are (understandably) some of the highest in the area.

A sprawling, 584-room resort located directly on St. Pete Beach, TradeWinds Island Grand Beach Resort has put effort into its grounds and interior, from the palm tree-lined lobby and warmly decorated rooms to the impressive outdoor pond with a fountain, and the surrounding covered walkways. The hotel sits on 20 acres of beachfront property and offers a number of water sports, including a giant slide, as well as several dining and entertainment options that are great for families with kids. Guests with dogs will appreciate the specialized menus, sitter service, play area, and other canine comforts. This upscale resort even packs a bit of a value, as all of the modern rooms include kitchenettes –but a pesky resort fee is a major downside.

The 211-room Guy Harvey Outpost is an upper-mid-range resort located directly on the sand in St. Pete Beach. This fresh and modern property offers a variety of family-friendly activities, and includes access to the TradeWinds Island Grand Hotel (bonus!) which is located about a block away. The hotel has fun features like marine-themed decor and artwork by artist Guy Harvey, rooms with ocean views, and a custom-made fish tank created by the stars of Animal Planet’s “Tanked” TV show. Rates are reasonable compared to other nearby hotels, but beware: the hotel does get a bit loud during holidays and spring break season.

The Plaza Beach Hotel Beachfront Resort is a 39-room, family-owned and operated mid-range boutique hotel with classic Floridian flare and the beach just out the backdoor. Situated in a popular resort area, the hotel caters to money-minding, vacationing friends and families with kids who want a few extras — there’s a heated pool, free mini-golf, and a free daily happy hour at the beach bar. Rooms haven’t much style, and bathrooms feel somewhat cramped, but there are well-equipped kitchenettes. There may not be a fitness room or spa, but we find the colorful beach chairs and swaying palm trees make for a more than satisfactory (and sunny!) retreat!

Postcard Inn On The Beach is a mid-range, 196-room local favorite located on the fine sands of St. Pete Beach. The hotel stands out from area resorts with surfer-chic decor that creates a hip and casual vibe in both the rooms and public spaces. There are some fun and quirky extras on the grounds, like a fire pit and arcade games. Rooms have whimsical decor, and prices are reasonable compared to nearby hotels. The beachfront location, on-site dining options, and cool amenities make this property a great choice for both families and groups.

Located in the Pass-a-Grille area of St. Pete Beach, The Inn on the Beach is a budget-friendly property providing a relaxing, quaint vacation spot evocative of old Florida. Although the building is dated, it has its charm, and the large cottages provide a quiet break from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s a great spot for a romantic getaway, or for anyone looking for peace and quiet. A variety of room types include those with full kitchens, and freebies such as Wi-Fi and weekend breakfast adds to the value. There’s no pool, on-site restaurant, or gym, though — but you’ve got an entire beach and the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico just across the street, as well as great eats within walking distance down the street.
