Nov 19, 2024 7:30 AM

Tracing historical routes often finds a place on the bucket lists of curious travellers. They do this by exploring archaeological sites, which offer a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of ancient civilisations and discover what remains of former societies. One such fascinating site is Keeladi, a charming village in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, around 13km from Madurai. Here, you will discover evidence of Keeladi's storied past, which the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has unearthed through various excavations along the Vaigai River. These large-scale excavations offer a glimpse into the ancient culture of the Tamil people, making Keeladi a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to uncover India's rich history.

  Incredible Discovery

The Keeladi site has garnered worldwide attention due to the remarkable discoveries made by archaeologists. These findings have shed light on the ancient civilisation that once thrived in the region. A recent analysis of carbon samples collected from the site has revealed that they date back to the 6th century BCE, indicating that the region had achieved high literacy levels during this period. Researchers have found graffiti at Keeladi that dates back to 580 BCE and bears striking similarities to the Indus Valley script. This exciting revelation provides compelling evidence of a link between the Indus script and Tamil Brahmi. The archaeological excavations in Keeladi have also brought to light a stunning discovery of an urban civilisation that flourished during the Sangam era.

  The Keeladi Heritage Museum

The findings have been showcased at the Keeladi Heritage Museum. Opened to visitors in March 2023, this impressive museum houses thousands of rare and exceptional artefacts discovered during the archaeological excavation.

Spread across an impressive 32,000 square feet, the museum is a true masterpiece of traditional Chettinad architecture. The red terracotta tiles on the roof and the Athangudi tiles on the floor lend the museum a distinct aesthetic, reflecting the region's cultural heritage. The museum's design features beautifully styled patios, courtyards, and a pond, adding to its charm and beauty.

Visitors can explore the museum and learn about the rich history of Tamil Nadu through the vast array of exhibits on display highlighting the region's unique heritage. The ongoing excavation has uncovered a treasure trove of evidence that attests to the thriving industries of the past. Among the artefacts discovered were 56 potsherds inscribed with Tamil Brahmi, several spindle whorls, bone tip tools, hanging stones of the yarn, terracotta spheres, copper needles, and earthen vessels. These prove the presence of skilled artisans producing exquisite pottery and textiles.

The archaeologists have also unearthed fascinating relics such as unique gaming equipment, gold jewellery, copper vessels, and knives, which provide a glimpse into people's lives. Furthermore, the discovery of toilet-like structures in certain areas indicates that early civilisations were advanced in their sanitation practices.

In addition to its impressive collection, the Keeladi Heritage Museum offers immersive experiences that take visitors on a journey through time.
