The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles

MoCA, now thirty years old, is home to the best of contemporary art exhibits in Los Angeles. It has three locations: the main museum downtown, the Geffen Contemporary (also downtown), and the MoCA at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.

The main museum (250 South Grand Avenue) has curated shows for established as well as emerging artists, placing them in the forefront of the art world. Its permanent collection includes work by Jean-Michel Basquiet, Jackson Pollock, Julian Schnabel, Frank Stella, and David Hockney, among others. The first Sunday of each month, MoCA conducts a family tour, developed especially for kids.

The Geffen Contemporary (152 North Central Avenue), nearby, was originally erected while MoCA was undergoing renovations but it is now a permanent space. Often, it is where you’ll see more recent work from lesser-known artists or works that require a great deal of space. Some pieces are designed specifically for the Geffen.

In 2000, MoCA opened a 3,000-square-foot exhibition space at the Pacific Design Center (8687 Melrose Avenue). Its programs based on its current exhibition, and most take place in the seated theater.
