A trading port of great historical importance, Banda Neira still has many relics of the Dutch colonial era. Two Dutch forts from the 1600s, the restored Fort Belgica and the unrestored Fort Nassau, offer explorers a contrasting view back into the island's past. An old Dutch church still stands as well. The high places of the island offer scenic views of the harbor and of neighboring islands, such as the volcanic Banda Api. Groves of indigenous Myristica trees yield nutmeg and mace, two of the keys to Banda Neira's importance in the colonial trading days.
