Lake Huron is the third-largest fresh water lake on earth and is the second-largest of the Great Lakes. The lake is home to Manitoulin Island, one of the largest islands on any lake, and Georgian Bay, which is nicknamed "The Sixth Great Lake". Lake Huron was the first of the Great Lakes to be discovered by French explorers, who having never seen a lake so immense, called it "La Mer Douce," or, the freshwater sea. It takes its name from the principal Indian tribe that lived on its shores. It is bordered by Michigan and Ontario.
