Lobito, one of the finest natural harbours in Africa, is a port city protected by a 3-mile long sandspit. The city was founded in the mid-1800s, but did not thrive until the Benguela Railway was put in place in the early 1900s. Known for its primary export business of agricultural produce, Lobito is also an important industrial center for manufacturing small ships, refining sugars, canning fish, and crafting building materials. The institution of the railway allows for easy transport of these goods, as well as quick transit for travelers wishing to visit places like Zambia.
