There are several picturesque locations in Miyako-jima, including Maehama beach, Painagama Beach, the sights on Irabu-jima and the German Cultural Center. A short trip across one of three bridges can take you the surrounding islands: Irabujima, Ikemajima and Kurimajima. The area is also known for its food. It has its own version of soba, a specific type of noodle soup from the Okinawa prefecture. Its most famous festival is called Paantu, and this festival is unique to the area. Men dressed in grass and mud walk around to smear mud on houses, people and cars. The local legend says that those muddied by the men will have a year of good fortune.
