Few indigenous ceremonies are as renowned and intriguing as the land diving of Pentecost at Wanur. In a ritual called N'gol, men bravely leap from platforms 90 feet high, putting their faith in carefully prepared vines wrapped around their ankles to break their fall. This display of manhood is only held once a year, and islanders strictly limit the number of outsiders allowed to witness this dramatic spectacle, which inspired the contemporary sport of bungee jumping.
