At the top of one of the green peaks bordering Hatiheu Bay, on the northern coast, is a statue of the Virgin Mary above the sea. Taipivai Valley is one of the largest and most fertile valleys in Nuku Hiva (Taiohae); it has numerous waterfalls, a long river and one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in the Marquesas, including several tiki. Be sure to visit Anaho Bay -- its golden beach offers great swimming. During your stay on the island, don't miss the works of the sculptors of Taiohae; they are unquestionably the most skilled craftspeople in French Polynesia.
