The city of Takamatsu is the capital of Japan's smallest prefecture, Kagawa. Until the Seto Ohashi Bridge opened in 1988, Takamatsu was the main entry port to Shikoku Island. Two of the most recognizable features found here are Takamatsu Castle and Ritsurin Koen, the most beautiful gardens in Japan. There is plenty to do in this town, such as a visit to contemporary craft fairs, taking a heritage walk, or indulging in a local culinary specialty like Sanuki Udon. However, for travelers who wish to explore beyond Takamatsu, the city is a great jumping-off point for those looking at destinations on the islands of the Inland Sea.
