Oct 18, 2024 4:44 AM

Chicago is a city of firsts, particularly when it comes to architecture. And Pullman, the first planned industrial town in the country and the city’s first National Park, is arguably one of Chicago’s most fascinating architectural achievements.

For one weekend only, architecture and history buffs can get an inside look at life in this historic model community. The Annual Historic Pullman House Tour on Oct. 12 and 13 offers exclusive access to the interior of well-preserved private homes throughout the Pullman area, offering visitors a chance to go back in time to the 19th century.

Pullman House Tours

Pullman House Tours The event has been a local favorite for more than 50 years. First held in 1973, the Annual Historic Pullman House Tour has grown to become one of the city’s oldest continuous house tour events.

House Tour ticket holders will be able to take a self-guided walking tour of seven private homes, representing an array of 1880s residential styles. The chosen homes also depict the different types of residents that lived in Pullman during its heyday as an industrial community, from humble workers cottages to stately executive homes.

Pullman National Historic Park

Pullman National Historic Park The Pullman neighborhood was originally built from scratch as the county’s first planned industrial town. Designed by luxury railcar tycoon George Pullman for his employees, the community included more than 1,500 company-owned houses, a church, a school, and a building that housed offices, stores, a library, and a bank.

While many Pullman homes maintain their era-appropriate historic details on the exterior, surprises await when you step inside. Some interiors have been carefully restored to their original glory, while others have been redone with modern sensibilities — and each reflects the current homeowners unique tastes.

Along with the House Tours, the entire Pullman neighborhood will be celebrating all weekend long. Explore select public buildings throughout the National Historic Park to learn more about the area’s unique history. Plus, enjoy live music, food, antique cars, exhibits, and more.

Discounted tickets can be purchased in advance through Oct. 10. Tickets will also be available to purchase at the Historic Pullman Exhibit Hall during the event. The self-guided house tours will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 12 and 13, 2024..
