Nov 19, 2024 4:36 AM

The monsoon season in Maharashtra brings a plethora of exciting adventures. The verdant landscapes, glistening waterfalls, and refreshing breeze entice people to escape the urban jungle and embrace outdoor activities. The best part is that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you prefer leisurely walks through serene valleys, moderate-level treks to discover hidden forts or even thrilling hikes up steep mountains, Maharashtra has it all. Here are the top trekking trails for adventure enthusiasts desiring to explore the state on a rainy day.

  Devkund Waterfall, Bhira Village

Deep within the forests surrounding the Bhira Dam, the Devkund Waterfall tumbles from 80 ft. The trail starts along the dam's banks and advances into the dense forests and rocky paths with a short climb. If the climb tires you out, you could refuel at the tea and food stalls along the route. You can also swim in a small pond filled by the gushing falls. But be careful, as certain pond sections go 60 ft deep.

  Best time to visit: August-November

  Peb Fort, Matheran

Near Matheran, Peb or Vikatgad Fort is a lesser-explored trekking spot, perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape. It is particularly suitable for beginners, as the trail is easy to navigate. The fort also houses a cave, from where you can catch the most scenic views of the Matheran range. Besides, travellers can experience the hills at night by camping in the caves.

  Bhivpuri Waterfalls, Karjat

Explore the foothills of Bhivpuri village, dotted by gentle streams. The trek to this picturesque spot is relatively easy and makes for a fun family activity. Upon reaching the top, soak in the village's natural beauty while enjoying the falls and indulge in snacks available at the nearby food shacks as you stop for a breather. As you descend, consider visiting nearby attractions such as the Bhivpuri Dam, a hydroelectricity plant, and a Sai Baba temple.

  Best time to visit: June-September

  Duke's Nose, Khandala

This popular trekking spot is known for its cliff that resembles the Duke of Wellington's nose, characterised by a flat top that makes for a famed viewpoint. There are two routes available for trekkers to reach the summit. One starts at Khandala station, while the other begins at Kurvande village and takes approximately four hours. Regardless of the chosen route, both offer panoramic views of Khandala and the Sahyadri. If you want to dial up the adventure, try rappelling and rock climbing.

  Best time to visit: July-September

  Karnala Fort, Raigad

Set amidst rolling hills, the Karnala Fort offers a perfect getaway. As you enter the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, you'll be welcomed by the musical chirps of songbirds like the paradise flycatcher and magpie robin. The sanctuary provides two options for trekking - a well-defined, motorable trail and a rocky track encircling the sanctuary, both leading uphill. These paths converge at the base of the 14th-century fort. Take advantage of the opportunity to visit the Pandu Tower at the centre of the fort's higher level. This 125-foot basalt tower, resembling a thumb, served as a watchtower in the past.
