The Venice in California has canals, too!

Did you know that Venice — the one in California — has canals? Venice, California, was originally modeled after Venice, Italy. Some of the canals are still there, in a beautiful upscale neighborhood, where no cars are allowed. Visiting these canals when visiting famous Venice Beach is a must-see.

Venice Beach is notorious for the sideshow performers, tarot card readers, muscle men lifting weights, roller skaters (still there!), and various other characters. However, tucked away just behind Abbot Kinney Boulevard (a great shopping street), are the original canals, as envisioned by Abbot Kinney himself in 1905. There were originally 16 miles of canals dug, and although only a portion remains, the history is legendary.

This is an area that still draws artists and poets, because it truly is an inspiration. Jim Morrison of The Doors once lived here, and many famous artists still do. Homes here sell for many millions of dollars, but any visitor can walk along the water, over the bridges, and take in one of Los Angeles’ most interesting and beautiful neighborhoods.

Consider this an afternoon day hike, but easy for all. Even children will enjoy this walk, as there are ducks, playgrounds, and 14 small bridges to cross — always a delight for kids. The Venice Canals are located near the Pacific Coast between Washington Avenue and Venice Boulevard, just two blocks east of Pacific Avenue (enter at Carroll Court and Eastern Canal Court). Each canal has its own personality, and each home is more unique than the next. It’s a great stroll at dusk and of particular interest to architecture buffs because the original small California bungalows sit next to modern homes. It’s a great refuge after visiting the bustling and chaotic Venice Boardwalk just a couple blocks away.
